- The third start of the du Tour de France in Spain, following San Sebastian (in 1992) and Bilbao (in 2023), will be the first welcomed by Barcelona, to kick off the 113th edition of the race.
- The Catalan capital, which has already welcomed the Tour de France for stages on three occasions (in 1957, 1965 and 2009), shares a long history with cycling, especially on the roads of Montjuïc hill, which has hosted stages of the Vuelta a España and Volta a Catalunya as well as races at the World Championships and Olympic Games.
- The main site of the 1992 Olympics will also be at the heart of the programme on the first two stages on 4th and 5th July 2026, because the finishes of the inaugural team time-trial (19.7 km) and the following day’s stage (178 km) will both take place on Montjuïc hill in front of the Olympic stadium, with, from the outset, a possible showdown between the big favourites for the race.
Grand Départ Barcelone 2026
CHOICE OF THE HEART - Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France.
It started as a mutual wish, expressed in 2009, as the Tour last passed through Barcelona. A wish respoken by Jaume Collboni Cuadrado ten years later, when he became First Deputy Mayor of the city, then expressed more firmly in 2023 with his election as Mayor. Barcelona wanted the Tour… and the Tour fell under the charm of Barcelona. A great Catalan city, offering the prestige, appeal and beating heart necessary for a Grand Départ. Barcelona has already organised other of the world’s greatest sporting events against its magnificent maritime backdrop and unique geography, crowned by Montjuic Hill. So what was once a wish became an obvious choice. The first stage will reaffirm cycling as an individual sport run as a team, and promises to be spectacular. The second, culminating in a first fight between favourites, cycling shoulder to shoulder, will launch the Tour 2026 once and for all. Gràcies Barcelona!
BARCELONA, WORLD CAPITAL OF SPORT - Jaume COLLBONI CUADRADO, Mayor of Barcelona.
Barcelona is proud and pleased to once again welcome the Tour de France. A new jewel in Barcelona’s crown, as the only city to date to have already hosted three major sporting events: the Football World Cup in 1982, the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 1992, and the America’s Cup in 2024. And now we’re writing a new chapter in this story, as the Grand Départ city for the biggest and most famous cycling race in the world, the Tour de France 2026. As in 1957, 1965 and 2009, when we hosted different stages of the Tour, we’ll be at the heart of world cycling. We’ll once again be part of the Tour family and turn the city into a one-of-a-kind setting for Le Grand Départ. The people of Barcelona can't wait to unleash their enthusiasm.
BARCELONA, MEDITERRANEAN AND INNOVATIVE
Barcelona is a unique city. A diverse, dynamic and thriving global city, rethought and transformed every day. A Mediterranean city open to commerce and exchange, but also to other cultures, people and ideas from all around the world. It is also a welcoming city, which looks after its people and neighbourhoods. The city is committed to sustainability and the environment, and culture, innovation and science are an important part of its economic model. Its heritage and cultural wealth are a central part of its identity. Always an avant-garde city, the cradle of Modernisme, it is where Catalan, Spanish and European culture converge. Thanks to this open character, Barcelona has hosted major international events over the years that have driven its own progress and transformation. Now, with the Grand Départ 2026, Barcelona has consolidated its cycling tradition.
STAGE 1 - 4/07 - BARCELONA > BARCELONA - Team time-trial - 19.7 KM
Stage classification will be based on the time of the first rider in each team. Times will also be recorded individually for the overall classification according to the formula validated for Paris-Nice. Watch out for gaps! After starting out from the beaches, the course will initially favour cyclists’ collective strength with a beautiful out-and-back along the seafront, followed by a series of flat, straight boulevards at the foot of the Sagrada Família taken on at full speed. The final stretch, punctuated by two successive climbs up to the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium, will reshuffle the cards as favourites lose sight of each other.
STAGE 2 - 5/07 - TARRAGONA > BARCELONA - 178,4 KM
Tarragona, a city with a population of 136,000 and an archaeological ensemble listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will showcase its historic setting for a stage that will start out by following the coastal road. The first half of the route, which is perfectly flat, passes through some popular beach resorts and then, after Sitges, known as the Spanish Saint-Tropez, follows a long coastline with stunning panoramic sea views. The second part of the stage becomes very hilly and challenging from the Begues climb onwards. Going through Barcelona will lead to a final circuit, taking place in lush parkland and dominated by the tough ascent to Montjuïc Castle (1.6km, including 600m at 13%), to be climbed three times for an uphill finish, identical to that of the previous day's team time trial.
STAGE 3 - 6/07 - GRANOLLERS > ? - ? KM
Granollers, the capital of Spanish handball and a stone's throw from the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit that regularly hosts the Formula 1 and MotoGP Grand Prix World Championships, is a large town of 65,000 inhabitants on the outskirts of Barcelona. With its iconic Porxada, a 16th-century market hall, it will be the starting town for this stage heading north to the French border. This is an opportunity for Catalan spectators to cheer on the riders one last time, over a distance of more than a hundred kilometres, before they cross over to the other side of the Pyrenees. Whichever route is chosen, it won't be without challenges...
