WHERE CHAMPIONS ARE FORGED (I/VI) - SAN SEBASTIÁN: MIGUEL INDURAIN, EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE NEIGHBOUR

The route of the 2023 Tour de France includes several brushes with the fate of champions who defined the history of the race. Racing the Tour on home turf was often an intense sporting experience for these riders, who were born or settled down in some of the towns and cities that dot the map of this edition. In the run-up to the start of the event on 1 July, letour.fr is pulling out the photo album to revisit the ties of six extraordinary riders to the Grande Boucle.

The last time the Tour called at San Sebastián was in 1992, when Miguel Indurain claimed the prologue on home soil, clad in the yellow jersey, as was customary at the time for the reigning champion. Before rising to the top of planet cycling, the Navarrese had been a loyal and dedicated domestique for Pedro Delgado. He took over the leader's mantle from his mentor and easily surpassed his exploits with five back-to-back Tour de France victories. In a cruel twist of fate, his hometown of Pamplona was also the scene of his precipitous and unexpected decline when he last took part in the race, in 1996.
