2006: Oscar Pereiro, the right move

Spain’s only Tour de France team is also the longest serving participant since the same organization has been taking part in every single edition of the French race since 1983. Now known as Movistar, the squad was originally Reynolds with a young gun called Pedro Delgado. Among the current contenders, the team managed by Eusebio Unzué is the most successful with seven overall victories, five of them being snatched by Miguel Indurain (from 1991 to 1996). Delgado tops the list with winning in 1988 but the most unexpected victory came in 2006 with Oscar Pereiro. Disappointed because of the time he lost in the Pyrenees, the Galician rode away in stage 13 from Béziers to Montélimar. The peloton let him finish half an hour ahead. The large advantage enabled him to take the yellow jersey. He eventually lost it a second time to Floyd Landis during the penultimate stage against the clock in Montceau-les-Mines but reclaimed the title after the American was disqualified for a doping offense. Justice was served.

Movistar riders to watch out for on Le Tour 2017: Nairo Quintana (Col), Alejandro Valverde (Esp).
