“From kilometer zero today it was a nervous race. Everyone was nervous because of the wind and they were fighting for position at the front. We had a strong team that was able to stay at the front and the speed was picking up, not necessarily because anyone was riding but just because everyone was so intent on moving up so it got faster and faster. In the end it was a headwind and everyone knew it wasn’t going to split in the last 25km but there were a few more teams wanting to ride today. Still, some of the sprint squads weren’t committing so we didn’t catch the front guys.
“With a headwind it was always going to slow down. You’re limited to what you can do when it’s like that so we needed just one more guy from another team – just one guy from Quickstep perhaps – and maybe we’d have caught the front group. Okay, I won the sprint but I didn’t win the stage. But it’s absolutely nice to keep the green jersey, it’s a consolation…”
