More than 600 characters and almost 1,000 animals are depicted in the gigantic 68-metre-long Bayeux Tapestry, which tells the story of William the Conqueror’s seizure of the English throne in the 11th century. Much later, the town, just a few kilometres from Omaha Beach, played a central role in the Allied landings in June 1944. Although it’s never previously hosted the Tour de France peloton, it does already have a link to it as the home town of Kévin Vauquelin, winner of the Bologna stage in Italy last July.
