The Tour experienced an unusual incident on the road to Pontarlier during its 2001 edition. A breakaway of 14 riders built up a considerable lead over the peloton, which seemed oblivious to the seriousness of the situation. At the finish, Erik Dekker crossed the line 35 minutes ahead of the peloton, while Stuart O’Grady inherited the Yellow Jersey. Strict application of the rules would have led to the disqualification of the entire peloton... after just eight days of racing. Eight years later, Pontarlier hosted the start of a stage to the Swiss resort of Verbier, where Alberto Contador was the victor.
