The climb to Superbagnères was a feature of the Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon years, starting in 1979 when “the Badger” took the Yellow Jersey by winning the stage two time trial that finished at the ski resort. Seven years later, the Breton ended up caught in his own trap after he attacked too early and then paid for it on the climb, where he saw his team-mate Greg LeMond close the gap on him, revitalising their contest for the overall title. In 1989, one of the key episodes in the Fignon-LeMond duel took place at Superbagnères, where the Frenchman claimed the race lead from the American, although his advantage was a mere seven seconds at the race’s halfway stage.
