BARCELONNETTE

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Pierre-Gilles de Gennes and world champion downhill skier Carole Merle attended the secondary school in this small town in the Ubaye valley. In 1975, it was in Barcelonnette that Bernard Thévenet wore the Yellow Jersey in the race for the first time. Winner of the stage to Pra-Loup the day before, when he knocked Eddy Merckx off his throne, the Peugeot leader followed up with another impressive feat, gaining more than two minutes on his rival as he won the stage in Serre Chevalier.
